Is everyone back in the office or has the building been abandoned for good?

19/10/2021

What will your policy be? Working from home, compulsory return to the office or free choice?
The lockdown and the mandatory home office are over (at least for now). What will the policy
in your company be? Employees want to be in the office, but no longer every day.
The question arises as to where the emphasis will lie: will it be Virtual First or Office Centric?

Many Tech companies have the option to choose Virtual First and they do just that. Manufacturing companies do not have that choice and are often forced to the Office Centric model. Whatever the case may be, every entrepreneur is facing the question of what the new guidelines will be.
Often the choice will be a form of hybrid working and the past year and a half has taught us
that this requires a solid plan and clear agreements. We know from experience that it starts
with an inventory of the wishes and experience of employees and their managers. Generally speaking, the managers tend to favor everyone be present in the office, while approximately 90% of the employees
have more nuanced ideas about this. Working at home or at a workplace close to home can be more effective and efficient. Video calls for structured consultation are a positive change compared to all kinds of meeting structures at the office. For interaction and processes that require creativity, however it’s still best to come to the office.

Structure the rhythm of the day and the week. Provide consistency and also make room for irregularities. Determine the hours that everyone must be available, online or physically as well as the times that management, managers and employees, with few exceptions, should not be disturbed and therefore may not bother each other with emails or messages. Some of the agreements that you can / should make: Which days are people free to be working from home or at the office; how to keep track of where someone is at any given moment. Finally, try to ensure that there is no inequality and that your employees take time for (mandatory) breaks.
